The Potter’s House – Tramaine Hawkins – Lyrics

“In case you have fallen by the wayside of life. Dreams and visions shattered, You’re all broken inside. You don’t have to stay in the shape that you’re in. The Potter wants to put you back together again. Oh, the Potter wants to put you back together again.

In case your situation has turned upside down,
And all that you’ve accomplished, is now on the ground. You don’t have to stay in the shape that you’re in. The Potter wants to put you back together again. Oh, the Potter wants to put you back together again.

You who are broken, stop by the Potter’s house.
You who need mending, stop by the Potter’s house. Give Him the fragments of your broken life, my friend, the Potter wants to put you back together again, Oh, the Potter wants to put you back together again.

Joy in the Potter’s house.

Peace in the Potter’s house.

Love in the Potter’s house.

There is salvation in the Potter’s house.

There is healing in the Potter’s house.

There is deliverance in the Potter’s house.

You’ll find everything you need in the Potter’s house.

The Potter wants to put you back together again. Oh, the Potter wants to put you back together again.”

Most Used Products for Healthy Lifestyle Protocols

Often when people begin most lifestyle protocols such as Whole30, Paleo, AIP (Autoimmune Paleo/Protocol); etc, they have questions about what a certain product is or where to find it.  I decided to compile a list of some of my must-haves and favorite items.  Hopefully, this will help you on your journey to a healthier you.

Let’s start with the basics:

  • High-Quality Meats/Seafood (antibiotic/steroid free, pasture raised, grass-fed, sustainable, wild as much as possible) & Vegetables (organic preferably) – All of these can be found at most supermarkets and large warehouse stores like Sam’s Club, BJ’s, or Costco. You can also find them at Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Kroger’s, and Aldi’s. These items and other health-related products can often be found online at sites like ThriveMarket and/or Amazon.  Find the High-Quality meats at US Wellness Meats and places like ButcherBox (free bacon in each box).  If there are any Asian Markets in your area, please take advantage of their enormous selection of fresh fruits, vegetables and sometimes fresh seafood (they will clean and filet the fish for you right there).  Farmer’s Markets are great to get your fresh meats/fish/seafood/vegetables as well.

Next, we’ll discuss the Quality Fats. Unrefined, Organic, and Extra Virgin are preferred:

  • EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil) – The oil is mechanically pressed from the olives without heat or chemistry. Opt for cold pressed, a darker bottle and a harvest date when choosing your EVOO. Look for Lucero, Corto, Kirkland Signature Organic, California Olive Ranch, Cobram Estate, or McEvoy Ranch Organic.  I normally purchase mine from Amazon (links included) or Sams Club.
  • Unrefined Virgin Coconut Oil – (The label can say extra virgin or virgin…it’s the same thing) This oil is either extracted from moist coconut meat, the water and oil are divided by boiling, fermenting, and refrigeration or the fresh meat is quick-dried and mechanically pressed to release the oil.  You can cook with this, add it to your smoothies, and hot drinks. *Remember this coconut oil is solid at room temperatures below 76 degrees.  My preferred place of purchase is Amazon (link included) & Sams Club.  I purchase this in bulk.
  • Expeller Pressed Refined Coconut Oil – The unrefined is the healthiest but if you don’t like the taste of coconut you can opt for this one. *This particular refined oil is also solid.  Do not get the “refined” oil that is liquid at all temperatures.
  • Avocado Oil – I get this from Sam’s Club, Amazon, Thrive Market.
  • Palm Oil/Shortening – I’ve purchased this from Amazon and Thrive Market.
  • Lard, Tallow, or/and Duck Fat (organic/grass-fed/pasture raised) – I purchase this from Thrive Market.
  • Ghee Clarified Butter (Whole30 only) – I grab this from Amazon and Thrive Market
  • Nut Oils (Paleo/Whole30) – Walnut, Almond, Macadamia, Hazelnut; etc. – These can be purchased at most stores.

The 2 Favorite & Most Mentioned Kinds of Vinegar:

  • Balsamic Vinegar – Add it to salad dressing, sauces, meats, vegetables, marinades; etc.  I purchase this from Amazon and Sam’s Club.
  • Organic Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar with the Mother – There are so many uses for this one…use it the same as the Balsamic Vinegar, add to your drinking water, use it to extract nutrients when preparing vegetable/meat/bone broth and so much more.  Chose Organic Raw Unfiltered w/the Mother in it.  I order it from Amazon and usually in bulk.

Milk products from animals are a “no” on the above protocols.  If you are looking for something to drink, bake with, make into yogurt, add to your porridge, or gluten-free cereal…opt for:

  • Organic Coconut Milk – Preferably full fat without guar gum or other unnatural ingredients. Read the label or make your own!  I purchase mine from Amazon or Trader Joe’s. trader joes coconut milk
  • Almond/Cashew Milk (Paleo/Whole30 only) – Free of carrageenan/additives/chemicals and unsweetened. Read the label or make your own!  I grab mine from Weis.

Then there are the starches and flours which you can use to bake gluten-free foods, make porridges, and thicken gravy, soups, or sauces:

  • Coconut Flour – Sam’s Club
  • Tapioca Starch/Flour – Amazon or Big Lots
  • Arrowroot Starch/Flour – Amazon or Big Lots
  • Cassava Flour – Amazon or Otto’s online
  • Almond Flour (Whole30 Only) – Amazon or Weis

A few other highly recommended nutritious and/or gut healing products are:

  • Bone Broth – Nutrient Dense, rich in protein/gelatin and minerals. Does wonders for the gut.  Drink it, add to soups, or braise vegetables with it.  You can also make this at home. You can grab this at any store.  Just make sure it’s compliant.  I grab it from Butcher Box, Kettle & Fire, and make my own.
  • Gelatin/Collagen Hydrolysate – Supports skin/hair/nail health and your digestive tract.  I purchase this from Amazon
  • Probiotic/Prebiotic/Fermented Drinks & Foods – Supports your Digestive Health – Kombucha, Sauerkraut, Coconut Milk Yogurt; etc.  I purchase these from Amazon, Sam’s Club, Aldi’s, and Whole Foods.

Two highly recommended & useful gadgets to help with either lifestyle protocol are the:

Four of my absolute favorites are:

  • Coconut Butter or Coconut Manna – I never knew this existed until I started AIP. It is basically coconut ground into a butter.  You can purchase or even make this yourself.  Add it to desserts, spread on sweet potatoes/fruits, add to your coffee or/and warm drinks.  You can even make fat bombs or candy bars with it.  I, myself, like to simply eat a spoonful (or two…lol) from time to time.  Stops my sugar craving.  I purchase this from Amazon and make my own.

Coconut manna

  • Coconut Aminos – Organic Coconut Tree Sap & Organic Sea Salt. This is used to replace soy sauce and add extra flavor to foods.  Add this to your homemade salad dressing, sauces, gravy, soups, sautés, hashes, skillets, cooked meats, or vegetables and enjoy.  I usually grab this from Amazon.
  • Artisan Tropic Cassava Strips w/Sea Salt – Perfect savory/salty snack. Gives you the feeling of eating potato chips.  Sometimes I sprinkle a little garlic powder in the bag and they are even better.  Mmmm!  I’ve grabbed this from Amazon and Whole Foods.
  • Plantain Chips/Strips (Sea Salt or Cinnamon) – Takes care of that salty or sweet craving. I sprinkle garlic powder in the Sea Salt Plantains bag too sometimes.  You can also make your own.  My favorite store bought sea salt ones are Inka and for a naturally sweet treat, I like Artisan Tropic Plantain Strips with Cinnamon.  I grab these from Amazon, Big Lots, and Whole Foods.

A few other tips:

  • For those who do not live near Sam’s Club, Costco & BJ’s normally carry the same products.
  • If you are not sure if a particular store carries your product, you can always call ahead or search the store’s website before going there.
  • Don’t hesitate to check the specialty grocery sections of places like Ross, Marshall’s, and TJ Max while there.  I’ve found some real goodies in there that are compliant at a major discount.
  • Once you’ve decided an item will be a regular, a good idea is to buy it in bulk.
  • Some Wholesale Warehouses and Supermarkets have their own brand of healthier food products…like Giant’s Nature’s Promise. Sometimes they will just happen to have packages of “high quality” meats.  You may have to do your own research.
  • The items I posted above are all Paleo, Whole30, and/or AIP compliant. Whichever lifestyle protocol you choose, be sure to be familiar with what is or isn’t compliant with yours and ALWAYS read labels!  🙂

Inflammation: Friend or Foe?

Inflammation can be your worst enemy while trying to be your best friend.

Merriam-Webster defines inflammation as “a local response to cellular injury that is marked by capillary dilatation, leukocytic infiltration, redness, heat, and pain and that serves as a mechanism initiating the elimination of noxious agents and of damaged tissue.”

Medicinenet.com defines it as “A localized reaction that produces redness, warmth, swelling, and pain as a result of infection, irritation, or injury. Inflammation can be external or internal.”

So although inflammation occurs to protect you it ends up causing many other problems for you and your body.

There’s acute inflammation and chronic inflammation. Acute inflammation occurs rapidly and escalates quickly. It can last from 1-2 days or even up to a few weeks. A few examples of when acute inflammation may happen is:

  1. Injury to the body (a scratch, a fall, a blow, exercise)
  2. Acute Sinusitis
  3. Acute Dermatitis
  4. Infected Ingrown Toenail
  5. Acute Bronchitis
  6. Acute Appendicitis
  7. Acute Tonsillitis
  8. Acute Infective Meningitis
  9. Allergies

Chronic inflammation can occur gradually but lasts for several months…even years. This can result from not purging whatever caused the acute inflammation. It can also be caused by exposure to irritants, chemicals, as well as an autoimmune response where the immune system attacks your body mistaken it for disease causing bacterium, viruses, or microorganisms. A few examples of diseases/conditions that include chronic inflammation are:

  1. Chronic Sinusitis
  2. Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
  3. Rheumatoid Arthritis
  4. Chrohn’s Disease
  5. Chronic Periodontitis
  6. Tuberculosis
  7. Lupus
  8. Diabetes
  9. Psoriasis
  10. Allergies

There are many other things that contribute to overall inflammation like stress, lack of sleep, and eating certain foods. Yes, the food we eat can cause inflammation! Foods high in Omega 6 fatty acids such as processed vegetable oils, grains, fast/fried/processed foods are some of the inflammation causing culprits.

Not sure if you have inflammation?  Some symptoms are:

  1. Red/Itchy Skin
  2. Memory Loss/Forgetfulness
  3. Abdominal Issues (Bloating/Flatulence/Diarrhea/Constipation/Indigestion)
  4. Itchy Eyes/Ears
  5. Painful/Stiff/Swollen Joints or/and Muscles
  6. Fever/Chills
  7. Skin Issues (Rash/Hives/Acne/Itchy/Rough/Dry/Scaly)
  8. Fatigue
  9. Allergies/Infections
  10. Excess Weight
  11. Water Detention
  12. An Autoimmune Disease (caused by excessive inflammation)

People often treat their inflammation with supplements/vitamins, prescription and/or over the counter medications (anti-inflammatory) such as:

  1. NSAIDs (naproxen, ibuprofen, and aspirin)
  2. Acetaminophen
  3. Corticosteroids
  4. Glucocorticoids
  5. Mineralocorticoids
  6. Serrapeptase
  7. Magnesium
  8. Zinc
  9. Vitamin D
  10. Probiotics

*Before trying any medication or supplement…consult with your doctor first!

Now let’s get back to the food. If you decrease or eliminate certain foods more than likely you will see a decrease and for some maybe even complete elimination of the inflammation along with the symptoms associated with it. Let’s start with the top inflammation causing foods:

Let’s start with the top inflammation causing foods:

  1. Trans Fats
  2. Sugar
  3. Gluten (Bread/Pasta)
  4. Grains (Wheat, Rice, Corn)
  5. Alcohol
  6. Omega-6 Fatty Acids
  7. Dairy (Milk, Cheese, Ice Cream)
  8. Nightshades (White potatoes, Peppers, Eggplant, Tomatoes)
  9. MSG
  10. Processed Foods & GMO’s
  11. Vegetable/Hydrogenated Oils

You may not be willing to give up all or even any of these foods. If you suffer from acute or chronic inflammation, you should definitely give it a try. Start with eliminating at least one and try it for at least a month. Keep a journal documenting what you eat and have eliminated as well as the symptoms (and their severity) you have before, during, and after eliminations.  Your best bet and quickest results will come from eliminating all of those foods for a few months until all symptoms are gone and then gradually reintroduce the foods one at a time to see if the inflammation/symptoms return.

There are foods, herbs and other lifestyle changes that can help reduce your inflammation such as:

  1. Blueberries/Strawberries
  2. Green Leafy Vegetables
  3. Turmeric/Ginger
  4. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  5. Omega 3 Rich Oily Fish
  6. Avocado
  7. Beets
  8. Broccoli
  9. Celery
  10. Chia Seed
  11. Coconut Oil
  12. Walnuts
  13. Bone Broth
  14. Pineapple
  15. Spices (Ginger/Rosemary/Turmeric/Oregano)
  16. Antioxidants
  17. Allergen-Free Diet (avoiding those foods you are allergic/sensitive to)
  18. Yoga/Deep Breathing
  19. Regular Exercise

Now that you suspect or know that you have inflammation, what are you going to do about it?

In Count Down Mode – Vacation On the Way!

Greetings Gems!

It’s been a minute since I’ve written a blog but I promise I will get better with this.

In the meantime, I’m at work and it’s 3:00 am.  I am waiting for what I call “the bell to ring” at 5:00 am.  I am excited and anxious at the same time because DH and I are leaving for a long awaited vacation to Punta Cana in 2 more days!  The last official vacation we went on was a 7 day cruise to the Bahamas in 2012.  In 2015 we drove to PA and spent the weekend.  Last year we visited Georgia but it was to witness a family member graduate from college.  So in 2 days it will be all about DH and I and we will be gone for 6 days.

We booked our vacation through a site called Bookit.com.  They had some great package deals.  The one we choose included the hotel, travel, and we added some activities to our deal.  I also found a promo code from coupons.com and made my Bookit purchase through Ebates.  Using those methods enabled us to save $150.00 on top of the savings for the package deal.  Every little bit counts right?

Spirit is the airline that Bookit used for our travel.  Prior to making the reservation, we had never heard of Spirit.  Apparently that was the cheapest flight for our trip so we took it.  It wasn’t till after I received my confirmation that I realized it was the cheapest for good reason.  Spirit Airline is completely basic.  They allow you to bring one item on board and that’s it.  If you wish to bring a carry on bag or check any bags, you have to pay for each of them.  You also have to purchase your bags in advance or be charged a higher fee at the airport.  They also do not feed or give you any drinks.  They have something on board but you would have to purchase it.  I was slightly discouraged of the news about the airline but reservations were made and we intend on enjoying our trip so we will do what we have to do.  I’ll let you know when we get back how everything turned out.

We will be staying at Barcelo Bavaro Beach-Adults Only.  BBB-AO is 1 of the 4 properties of Barcelo Bavaro Grand Resort.  There’s also Barcelo Bavaro Palace, Premium Level at Barcelo Bavaro Palace and the Family Club at Barcelo Bavaro Palace.  We are able to use the facilities of each as far as the daily activities, cuisine, sports, and more.

DH and I have been super busy wearing a few hats.  He wears twice as many as I do. This is definitely a needed break for both of us.  This break is needed so much that I already have big plans when I come back.  I expect to be rejuvenated.  I intend on putting into action several unfinished plans and projects that I’ve procrastinated on.   I already feel like I am going to hit the ground running when we land back here in our hometown…from my DH and my photography business, my blog, my FB group and pages to planning my 50th celebration and next vacation (hopefully to Hawaii).  Maybe I’ll even start my book…at least get the outline started.

“Sometimes it’s important to work for that pot of gold. But other times it’s essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow.”  ~Douglas Pagels

When was your last vacation and do you feel as though it made an impact on your life?
